How to lose weight – my Freeletics experience

Well, I really don’t remember when I first heard about Freeletics, but for sure I’m one of the “early users”.

I registered to the site when the app was not available yet – and they send me some pdf files. In one of them there was also “Aphrodite”, a very famous workout for Free Athletes.

As I told you in the About page, Freeletics is the key tool that I used to fix my unfit body.

What is Freeletics?

Freeletics is a high intensity bodyweight training app. The free version gives you the access to some basic workouts, but it is worth to pay for the Coach, that is the core of the system. The Coach will program a weekly training schedule that is fully personalized for your fitness level, it will challenge you to improve and it will ask you feedback on technique and effort in order to bring you, week by week, to become the best version of yourself.

Ok, this seems like a good commercial

In fact, Freeletics changed my life and that’s why I’m so enthusiastic. I’ve also recorded some training sessions in the 1-year period during which I trained 3 or 4 times weekly, so you can see my transformation:

How does it work?

If you wish to try, register and download the app. Just go to: https://www.freeletics.com/t/412390?v=4 (this link contains my referral, if you register by going here you will have a 20% reduction on the price) and register. This link will provide you two choices – Training Coach alone or Training & Nutrition together. I’ve never tried the Nutrition Coach, so I cannot give you any suggestion about it. I’ve just used Bodyweight Coach and I think that’s great!

The app will ask you to start with a fitness test asking you some questions as gender, height, goal etc. After that the first training week will be created for you. In the app you will find the video of all exercises. Watch them carefully and keep in mind  the key points that are shown.

The only tool you will have to use to do Bodyweight program is a pullup bar. In some cases, a short running workout is also provided.

Before starting, read carefully the Help Center, you will find important information about training. Remember that – as stated also in freeletics site – you have to check out with your doctor if your health status is ok. Dont’t start any kind of High Intensity training like freeletics without  consulting a doctor before.

My experience

If you have watched  the video, you saw how my condition was when I started. I wasn’t able to do a crunch and I felt tired after doing any kind of move. First workout sessions were very hard, but after 3 weeks something changed.

The body reacts, if you put a sufficient effort in what you are doing!

My weight dropped 14kgs in the first 14 weeks (so an average of 1kg/week). During these weeks I also started eating an average of 1800kcal per day, following this macro distribution: 50% carbs, 25% proteins, 25% fats. I ate every type of non-junk food around, avoiding alcohol for the whole period.

After these 14 weeks, I started a ketogenic diet (and I rise calories, reaching 2200kcal per day). I’ve been working out on ketones (energetic particles that your body creates from fat when you activate ketosis, the goal of the ketogenic diet) for 40 weeks, until reaching the “final” weight of 78kgs.

It was during my freeletics experience that I discovered how much I love running!

I always trained outside so, after some running session proposed by the coach, I started to look for training places around. This way  I added 2 running sessions every day (one to reach the training spot and one to leave). At the end of the video you can see a training spot that was 5km away from my home, so every training day I also did 10km of running.

Am I still using freeletics?

In the last 2 years I’ve used the Coach from time to time. As I started more challenging running trainings, the lack of time forced me to do lesser freeletics workout. I’ve tried to train both, but there are periods that I am more focused on running (like in this moment, because of how I challenged myself some days ago).

I still think it is a great app/system and I’d love to find a way to focus also on this. There are exercise like doing 500 burpees or finishing Aphrodite in 20 minutes that were very hard to complete – and when you focus on other things (for example running) your physical condition just changes. So 500 burpees are something too far at this moment, but I’m sure I’l reach (and overcame) them again.
